Tighten and Firm your skin
Dr Anjali Mahto, a consultant dermatologist at The Cranley Clinic, explains: ‘There are a number of reasons our skin starts to sag. Firstly, there is a reduction in the levels of collagen and elastin, which provide the skin’s structural support. This occurs due to factors such as exposure to UV rays. UV light slows down deposition of new collagen as well as activating the enzymes which break down existing collagen, causing the elasticity and volume in our skin to lessen as we age. Secondly, there is a loss of facial fat, the absence of which causes the face to droop. Lastly, there is reabsorption or loss of bone of the face over time and the skin can no longer tighten around it resulting in sag.’
It has been known for wonder ingredients such as Hyaluronic Acid can be helpful when lifting and firming the skin. Hyaluronic Acid is naturally made by the body and so can be used on any type of skin. 'HA (hyaluronic acid) is critical in maintaining skin hydration,' says Aesthetic Doctor, Dr. Maryam Zamani, 'although it can be degraded by free radical mechanisms caused by things like UV exposure. Topically applied, it helps to hydrate the skin and maintain this hydration as a humectant.'
Sagging skin can be prevented by various different ingredients within your skincare as well as protection from UV rays. Retinol, also known as Vitamin A, works to promote your skin’s renewal and enhances collagen production. "Retinol has a multitude of benefits. It is able to enhance the production of collagen and stop it from being broken down. This leads to firmer, plumper skin with diminished fine lines and wrinkles. Retinol can also speed up the skin cell regeneration cycle, which encourages a smoother, more even complexion. Finally, retinol can stop the process which makes pigment in the skin, reducing hyper pigmentation for a bright and even skin tone. You should start to notice a difference after 4 weeks, but significant skin changes could take up to 3 months," says Daniel Issacs.
Exfoliants such as Salicylic Acid (BHAs) or Glycolic Acid (AHAs) have been known to help build collagen under your skin. They have the ability to break down the bonds between dead skin cells and healthy ones, which work to give your skin a more even complexion. In doing this the action of exfoliating your skin can help promote the movement of blood under your skin and prevent the elastin and collagen under the skin from deteriorating quickly.
