Let’s talk about Chemical Exfoliators

Let’s talk about Chemical Exfoliators

If your ultimate skin care goal is brighter, more even tone skin, look no further than Chemical Exfoliators:

Alpha-Hydroxy Acids aka. AHAs are chemical compounds that help slough away dull, dead skin cells and eliminate dark spots. AHAs are water soluble with large molecules which means that they are unable to penetrate below the upper most layer of the skin surface, however they can be effective in reducing the appearance of wrinkles fine lines and cell turnover, perfect for glow-boosting properties. Some examples of AHAs are Glycolic, Lactic and Mandelic Acid.

Beta Hydroxy Acid aka BHA is oil soluble and can penetrate deep into the skins surface, removing excess sebum from pores and reducing oily skin. Perfect for blemish prone skin! The famous and only BHA is Salycilic Acid.

Polyhydroxy Acids also have large molecules which means that they are unable to penetrate the skin as effectively as BHAs. For those with sensitive skin, PHAs are likely to be the best option with popular acids being Gluconolactone and Lactobionic – look out for those in skincare products!

How to use Acids

Many skincare formulas with acids are designed for daily use. For those who are new to using acids, it’s wise to build up the usage slowly by using an acid once or twice a week and then increasing the concentration once the skin is ready. Acids should normally be used during the evening routine, followed by cleansing and if used in the morning, an SPF is a must for the final step.

Leading UK based dermatologist Dr. Sam Bunting recommends, those with sensitive skin should restrict the use of chemical exfoliators to no more than three times a week. Over-use of acids can cause sensitivity as too many peels can thin the epidermis (the top layer of your skin), so always precede with caution and take a ‘less is more’ approach.
