What are age spots?
Age spots are small, light brown to black spots that appear on the face, back of hands and other areas that are generally exposed to the sun. They occur when the top layer of your skin expands with more pigment and develops what looks like a large freckle (they might also appear in a cluster).
“Pigment spots are usually harmless although they can affect someone’s self confidence. Certain forms, such as melanoma (a type of skin cancer), can be life-threatening. If you have any concerns about your pigment spots-if they change shape, size & colour or if they become itchy and start to bleed - it’s important that you consult your doctor.”
Who’s at risk?
Certain people are more at risk than others at getting age spots, though anyone can get them no matter their race. People who are over the age of 40, have a fair skin tone with a history of frequent sun exposure or use of UV alternatives are more at risk of getting them.
How to prevent them?
Although not completely avoidable, there are a few things that can be done to prevent age spots, such as avoiding exposure to the sun between 10am and 3pm and wearing protective clothing such as hats, sunglasses and long sleeved shirts. In addition to this using sunscreen everyday, featuring both UVA and UVB protection, are helpful against age spots.
